The Westland Wessex HC.2 was a licence-built, turbine-powered version of the classic American Sikorsky S-58 ‘Choctaw’ helicopter — one of the world’s first truly capable helicopters, establishing the importance of rotary aircraft in both military and civilian roles. Built under an agreement between Sikorsky and Westland, the Wessex was initially developed for the Royal Navy for anti-submarine and utility duties. The HC.2 variant was later developed for the Royal Air Force, entering service in 1962, one year after the Navy version.
In RAF service, these powerful helicopters carried out multiple roles, including troop and supply transport, ground support and air evacuation. However, it was their work as Air Sea Rescue helicopters that made them some of the most recognisable aircraft of their time. The Wessex represented the height of helicopter technology on its introduction and could operate in places other aircraft could not reach.
