The LARC was the Light amphibious Resupply Cargo-V , was an aluminium truck resembling a boat out of water . It had a 5 ton ( V ) cargo capacity , it was the smallest of three designs which appeared in the 1960slt was designed and built for the US Army by the Condec Le Tourneau division of Westinghouse , entering service in 1963. It was widely used in the Vietnam war for landing supplies from ship to beach . Two transport companies operated the vehicle , the 344 th at Qui Nhon and the 347th at Cam Ranh Bay. The Larc-V weighed 8 tons and was powered by a 300bhp Cumming V-8 Diesel Engine which drove wheels and propellers. It had a road speed of 48Km/h and a speed of 7.5 Knot was possible in calm waters . The road range was 400kilometer on land . The vehicle was widely exported and used by seven coutries including Australia , Argentina , Germany , Iceland , Philippines , Portugal and Signapore . Some were given light armour for crew protection. Argentina used the vehilce during the invasion of the Falklands in 1982 but withdrawn before English response . It was a long serving vehicle with many still in use today , the US Navy re-built 42 vehicles under the Slep up-grade progam from 2006. Some were sold off for civilian recreational use. A total of around 970 were built , though many of these were destroyed when the Americans pulled out of Vietnam in 1973.
