Description
The Junkers Ju 52 is regarded as one of the most significant aircraft of the twentieth century. Originally designed as a single-engined freight aircraft, it made its first flight in October 1930. Just six months later, the three-engined Ju 52/3m variant emerged, offering increased power and greater operational reliability.
Capable of carrying up to 17 passengers, the aircraft played an important role in establishing Lufthansa’s early European air routes. Its distinctive corrugated magnesium-aluminium construction made the Ju 52 exceptionally rugged and dependable. During the Second World War, it became the backbone of the Luftwaffe’s air transport fleet and was used in a wide range of roles, including troop transport, air ambulance, paratrooper deployment, glider towing and specialised mine-clearing operations.
